I love blu ray but i cant help but think that HD DVD was the better format! I had no grief at all with my Toshiba ep-35. Put disks in press play and watch! Toshiba managed it.

I blame Tarantino. If he'd stuck with his original plan of making Kill Bill one awesome 2-hour long film instead of disapperaing up his bottom and splitting it into two not very good films then you would have half the problems.

No this doesn't really make any sense but thought I'd just get it in there...

Though I agree with garethwd that HD DVD was largely " put disks in press play and watch" I've had to update the firmware of my Toshiba HD-EP35 from 1.3 to 4.0 to overcome discs that would cause it display "loading" without playing & freezing during playback when it did play( eg Evan Almighty ).

A recently bought Panasonic DMP-BD35 firmware seems to be up to date playing back all 21 of my bluray discs without problems and BD Live ( eg Rambo ) worked without a hitch.

Personally I have not downloaded any firmware for My BD30 Player and my first diskettes were Ratatouille and Cars until the recent Walle and I now have around 30 BD in my collection. So surely if there is no problem then there is no need to update any firmware as If it is not broke then don't fix it philosophy.

had no problems with my toshiba hd-dvd so why now, after all hd should be more evolved by now and not going backwards

I'm considering going for a dedicated player instead of using my PS3. But I won't stand for these 'better' players being unable to do the basics and actually play a film!!!!

I am looking to replace my trusty old "Pacific 750" DVD player and logic says that I should go Blue-ray. But, with all the irritations surrounding the new format, I am having second thoughts, especially as I have a substantial library of standard DVD discs and the latest "standard" players all seem to upgrade these to almost HD quality and 24 FPS into the bargain, I believe.

Clare, do you, or your colleagues, have any knowledge of the Denon DVD-1800BD player yet?

We're expecting the Denon in early this year - should be interesting putting up against the Panasonic and Pioneer at around the same price point!

I have looked at other players but still stick with my PS3. It is very easy to update... and let's face it; the picture is still excellent.
