I've been working as a "scumbag day rate contractor" since I came back from the USA in 2007. Money's good when there's work, but everyone knows I'm heading back to the USA sooner or later and finding long term contracts is really difficult. Been "between assignments" for five weeks now and it really sucks. At least I'm doing work to help out my Texas-based wife with her business (oil and gas like me) so there's some money coming in to keep me, her, the two kids and that flipping head-gasket-blowing Discovery of hers going. And I get to work from home and listen to my stereo, so it's not all bad.
I'm in the same boat ... qual mech engineer with 25 yrs experience on cad/cam/cae ... (computer aided design.manufacture)
there is not much mechanial work in the UK at present (its cheaper to make thing overseas as labour costs are high in the UK) ... there is a bit of work in London, but contract rates are rubbish ... and then minus the £45 train fare daily plus the fact of waking up at 04h30 and getting home at 8pm, makes it very unpleasant
Then you work for 3 months, then contract comes to an end, then takes another 2-3 months to find another contract
so am looking for something different, but another stockmarket crash looming makes things look a bit 'gloomy' for the near term
