UP 3D

Went to see this in Southampton the other day. I was quite impressed actually but didn't like the glasses much.

Any thoughts on 3D films?

I quite like them if they're done right - hannah Montana Live in 3D is sh-te, whereas Coraline is quite good, because they use it simply to add depth to the picture rather than your usual "viscera coming atcha".

I agree that the glasses are a bit of a pain and I'm not sure that the cinemas are compensating the brightness enough for the fact that you are basically watching through a pair of sunglasses.

The quality of the effect also depends a great deal on where you are sitting. I saw "Coraline" (great film) in an empty cinema and was able to experiment with different viewing positions. If you are sat too far to one side, the picture starts to take on a very odd elongated perspective.

The really sad thing is that I chose a showing that I knew would be empty so I could do the experiment.

Fews years ago I took a day off and took my daughter to see Finding Nemo at 11am on a Friday. We were the only people in the cinema. Trouble was, she then thought that's what the cinema is all about - you get to sit in front of an enormous telly on your own - she couldn't understand why, on later trips, other people were being let in as well.

Perhaps I'm just a bit softie but I found it quite touching in places. Although it doesn't contain the hidden adult humour of Shrek. Worth seeing? Yeah, it was OK. Oh, and my kids (5 & 3) liked it.
