Which 37-42 inch TV should I buy? Up to £900

It's for my Mum and Dad (not very teccy!) and they'll have Sky HD.

  1. Sony KDL-37W5500
  2. Panasonic TX-L37S10
  3. Philips 37PFL7603D
  4. LG 42LH5000

But would consider others.  Unsure of plasma or LCD but what's important is:

Picture quality, obviously!

Need to have sound system which can operate from the same remote as they are not good with technology...

Would appreciate any input.  They all seem solid, would be good to hear more pros and cons and personal experience or from teh WhatHiFi team!

Thanks.

An easy one, the TX-L37S10, a 2009 What Hi-Fi award winner, cannot fault it and it wont stretch your budget as is a very cheap tv if your budget is £900.00.

Of the four models you've mentioned, the Panasonic TX-L37S10 and LG 42LH5000 are both Award winners, so take your pick. Both are excellent and well within your budget - guess it depends how big a screen your parents want!

Re: Which 37-42 inch TV should I buy? Up to £900

Fantastic, thanks!  they basically don't mind.  I left them with this year's What Hi Fi magazines so they have confidence in the decision making but I think it's a case of 42" is bigger but is it better?

They are about 11ft away from where the TV would be, are getting Sky HD and I'm tempted for them to go 42" but am I compromising on quality there?  Are there any others to consider? I tend to stick to award winners and 4-5* ones just because we bought the Pio 5090 and Yamaha Z7 on the strength of WHF reviews and helpful forum users and we now have film parties instead of cocktail ones ha ha ha.  It's a devastatingly good set up! Thanks.

I think I might persuade them into a sound system as well, so long as it's easy to config with whatever TV I get.

Are there any 40"ers I should consider?  Don't feel the need to answer all my questions people!

Thanks again.

I was in JLewis the other night and side by side the Plasma 42 TX-P42X10 looked better in SD and IMHO better in HD.

I still feel Panny are stronger with their plasma knowledge rather than LCD, there first offering at LCD should have never left the factory.

I know I sound like a broken record but don't get taken in by 'fullHD'  esp. at 42''

Try to take any Mag reviews with a pinch of salt and at best just a guide to whats out there and buy with your eyes or with your parents eyes!.

So called experienced people often, maybe with the best intentions, get it wrong, buy with your eyes.  And really check the SD performance and SD sport, most sets now resolve HD very well.  Its up to you whether your parents prefer a natural image to a LCD type cartoon picture. A few LCD panels can look natural but seen to fall down on SD.

At at 11ft get a 42 it will look big initially but will soon merge into the room, I'm not sure how old the parents are but my dad likes the fact he doesn't have to get his specs straight away!

Re: Which 37-42 inch TV should I buy? Up to £900

I had an LG 42-inch LCD TV that developed a nasty mains hum after about 3 weeks.  I replaced it with a Panasonic 42-inch plasma and have had no problems with it after 14 months of use.

Fortunately, DLP seems to have gone the way of the dodo.  The 3 year old 60-inch JVC DLP in Houston is on its fifth "bulb" and second motherboard.

Just saying.

I should be sponsored by Cyrus and Chord (and B&Q)!!

Ok so we've narrowed it down to the Panasonic TX-L37S10 and the LG 42LH5000.  The only question remaining is which is best?!  Impossible to compare in store of course for picture.  Thanks everyone for getting me thus far.

Just to suggest one more to your list, the Samsung "LED" TV. I always thought Samsung were rubbish at making TVs, until I came across one of these at a store: http://www.directtvs.co.uk/Samsung_UE40B7020WW_40_Inch_7_Series_LED_TV_UE40B7020WWXXC/version.asp?PID=

It's absolutely stunning, definitely worthy of a look.

Re: Which 37-42 inch TV should I buy? Up to £900

Hi there,

Thanks for this think I need to get them a 42" having measured their room.  Do you rate the Samsungs over the LG best buy?  Did you see a good 42" Samsung?  They look great but maybe priceier than the LGLH5000...

Thanks
