Re: Avatars

I believe it'll be Thursday now, as one of our sister sites needed some emergency surgery....

But the good news is that i've just heard one of our developers is very keen to answer your queries/give advice in person, so i'll bring this thread to his immediate attention!

And that will be me!

We are looking into this, (believe it or not we do look at this forum).

This is one of those horrible things where it is only happening to a few people which has got us stumped a bit to be honest.

So, those of you who are having problems can you talk me through what you are doing when you get a chance? More detail is good.

When I did mine I did the following, (this is for example not as an instruction);

On Apple MacBookPro using Photoshop I saved mine at 79px X 69px using jpeg progressive at 60 quality. Uploaded it using Firefox 2 from behind a company firewall.

If we can get a few answers we may be able to get there, if not we should be able to sort it out one way or another.

Re: Avatars

i loaded mine as a 80x80 jpeg (created within MS Office Picture manager; resolution 96dpi, bit depth 24) using IE6 sp2 in windows xp sp2 (and there's a company firewall in there somewhere too), and it didnt work.

and i just tried saving austins piccy above (which got saved as a bmp) and using that (but now i have to wait 10 mins), and after 10 mins the picture did not appear.

and also given it go using firefox3 and 10 mins later, that hasnt worked either.

Re: Avatars

ive tried different types of files, sizes, resolutions and none seem to work, most recently been trying to 80x80 jpegs with 100dpi res and bit depth 24, using vista + sp1 with ie7 behind a personal firewall,

Re: Avatars

Now this may strange but can you try saving my avatar from this page and then try uploading it as your own? (That way we can work out whether it's the image or the upload process that is going awry.)

i tried using your avatar pic, they hasn't worked either, dont no if this is any help, but when i  select whatever image i'm going to be using, the locatoin of that image appears in the "current avatar", box then after you click the update button the current avatar box is blank, as if the image hasn't been saved/uploaded, hope that makes sense

Re: Avatars

Thankyou John for lending me your avatar for a minute.

Right we now know that it is NOT the image that is a problem. Starting to think this could be a firewall & PC combination. I will investigate further... At least we know one thing now :)

Also do note that it takes about 10 minutes for the picture to update.

I got the same when I changed my Avatar i.e. when I clicked Update, the picture went back to my current Avatar so it looked like it hadn't saved. Lo and behold, 10 minutes later it updated mine with the new pic.

Not saying you're not having an issue, just that looks like this is a red herring.

Professor, are you a Mac or PC user? Which browser? Which version? From the people above it looks like windows = doesnt work, mac = does work.

Re: Avatars

Possibly, I am indeed using a Mac (OS X 10.4.11) and using Safari (version 3.1.2).

Re: Avatars

As a short term solution can anyone who has not been able to upload an avatar put there name in a list below? I'm getting the feeling that it isn't a huge amount of people, (hoping :).

I can then get in touch and I can do them for you. It's not ideal but if it means that you get an avatar then we can all live happily ever after.
