[snip] ... I have not heard any of them complaining over the quality of their audio files .... [snip]

Perhaps all that effort double-blind testing optical cables leaves no time to worry about the source?

Steady on there....

Only kidding, as I'm sure you realise .

I'm on this forum primarily because I think you and your team produce an awesome mag.

Shimminator:

Can someone explain why the itunes lossless isn't rated in this post?

i.e. why isn't it as good as the other's?

Because the OP shouted "NO" when iTunes was briefly brought up on page 1.

Re: ripping CD's to lossless. what is the best software?

I have ripped all my 1500 CDs to Apple Lossless on my Mac, saved them to a Western Digital hard drive and play them back through my Primare via an Airport Express - no problems at all if any of the quality of the original CDs is missing I can't hear it and I have some 24/192 files which sound considerably better than CDs.

I think the point we're missing here is that if you use Windows, you have lots of options, if you use a Mac you haven't, particularly in terms of getting a bit-accurate rip - it's iTunes error correction or nothing. That said, apple lossless sounds pretty bl--dy good to me, and it's been proven elsewhere that converting a wav to apple lossless and back again is bit-perfect.

And I say again that apple lossless will be the de facto standard (in a VHS sort of way) in a couple of years........

Re: ripping CD's to lossless. what is the best software?

On a related issue, what do people with Macs use to burn audio CDs. In particular, is there any good software that duplicates audio CDs without the need to rip them (with MAX, say) and then burn the files with a separate program?

I understand that MAX uses very good error correction, but will I loose quality in the burning process, too? Are there any integrated ripper/burners for audiophile purposes?

Thanks a lot for any help you can give!

Not something I do very often these days but on those rare occasions that I do want to burn a CD I just use iTunes. If there's an audiophile burner out there for Macs or PCs I've never heard of it.

No, the nearest you can get (though haven't ried Max for it's ripping facilities) is iTunes with error correction on.

As for CD copies, can't you just make an image of it using Disk Utility? or do you mean something else?

Hi John,

I've never succeeded doing this. Have you? If so, do let me know, please, as I may have made a mistake somewhere. None of the CDs I ever created that way ever played on a CD player. I think that's to do with the form of encoding or closing of the writing session...

PS  On a completely different issue, I've seen you refer recently to a cleaning disc for CD players, I tihnk. I have some problems with my CD player - lots of discs skip intermittently - does this sound like a case for such a cleaner to you, or could it be something more serious? No, I've never felt the need as I always burn discs from iTunes - which obviously involves unencoding from lossless, but works fine. I've created disc images to avoid using a software CD to run games, which worked fine.

For the sake of three quid, it's the first thing I'd do, yes - worked well when I got my Primare which had skipping issues initially.

Re: ripping CD's to lossless. what is the best software?

There are programs out there that will simply copy an audio CD, Toast being one example. However, I would suggest you rip with Max or XLD to Apple Lossless files and then burn those files using iTunes. This way you will have more confidence in the rip step than you'd get with Toast and no less confidence in the burn step. Plus Toast is not free, the others are.
