Re: Will A.Express work with Virgin's Netgear router?

Sounds frustrating mate - you have my sympathies.

I have installed 3 onto my wireless network now in client mode with not too much trouble. I have the BT Homehub though. I've learn't a couple of very simple things in the process though which may help:

1. Each time I added one to my network I needed to reset the router after the first installation attempt each time. The old switch it off, take the plug out from the wall and wait ten seconds routine. On my router this resets the IP address it assigns each of the AE units which then made them work after the router rebooted.

2. How does the Virgin router work? Does it use the wireless connection manager within XP itself, or does it have its own bespoke Virgin software that you need to install on your PC for the router to work?

The reason I ask is that my PC originally used some software installed by BT and I couldn't get it to work. When I turned off the BT wireless connection manager software and used the standard XP it then worked fine.

Not earth shattering stuff I appreciate - but these minor differences in approach made the difference between it working/not working.

In the wireless settings, did you go into wireless station access list ,and tick the access control box or is this unticked .And can you see all your wireless devices in this list.

Did you change all other devices to WPA as John suggested.

Re: Will A.Express work with Virgin's Netgear router?

had the same problem with my crappy german brand router one boot in 5 it would work otherwise the speakers not found message

worked perfectly when i used the netbook but erratically with my main computer and spent seeks trying to resolve the problem

first fix was to connect main computer to router by cable but leave the ae on wifi and that worked fine

second fix was to buy a mac and use that as a server

have you tried fixed ip adresses by the way and also checked logs on xp machine

wpa wep or no security didnt seem to matter by the way

is it the cr-ppy little blue thing that Virgin sometimes give you? In which case, it woun't work as it's not actually a router, merely an access point. I ended up buying a 40 quid router myself to get things on track.

No no, in fact it was a Netgear "G" modem router that arrived in its retail packaging. Very white and same-ish to my old O2 Broadband box, tbh.

So there's hope...

works fine for me. just set it up as an access point.

I'll post a screen print of my settings.

other than that just make sure you've allowed access under the airport utiliy.

I have a couple of Netgear routers and three switches and I find that they are OK (for the money) and certainly not crappy.

My Netgear gigabit network adapter is a different story and for some raeson will occasionally fail to find the (wired) network. Other times it'll find the network but fail to connect at gigabit speeds.
My useful(?) threads can be found here.

Bear in mind also that Virgin have been doing a lot of upgrades recently(I'm talking about loss of service not AE problems which are all intranet). In my area they did so many I thought my router was knackered which is why I ended up with two routers. It could be your particular DSL has been going in and out of sync with the alterations. You could have 2 simultaneous issues which is always a b****r.

Re: Will A.Express work with Virgin's Netgear router?

Ok, I tried again this morning. AE re-set up: Hard-wired into the back of the Netgear router > Join existing Network > Wireless network > Select Network + enter my router's pwd. Get a green light, all that's a good start I think.

On the Netgear router, I did as usual: Wireless Settings > ticked Access Control on > Add device > select the AE > Apply Settings.

This is where I lose all internet connection. Something is going very wrong here. And as a result in iTunes I just cannot connect to the speakers using AirTunes ("Enabled" in the AE settings).

From there, all I can do is unplug everything and connect to my Internet router with the Ethernet cable. Two steps back!!... :-(

Hi Momo,

If you are going into Access control mode  on ,you must add ALL wireless devices otherwise the router will not let them see each other or connect to the router..If they do not show on the  viewed wireless devices, you must add them manually with the MAC code. Thats why you lose internet connection.(I think)

Re: Will A.Express work with Virgin's Netgear router?

turn off the access control.

also make sure that you have the router on first then switch the ae on. I have found with mine that if i turn my router off and forget to switch off the NAS then everything goes wrong. it has to be Router on then NAS on. Not had any problems with the AE but you never know.

My router is the Netgear DG834 "G" and came pre-loaded with the lastest f/w available.

When I unticked the "Turn Access Control On" within "Wireless Settings", things slightly improve in the way that I don't lose my internet connection any longer. I still can't connect in iTunes to the AE speakers.

I have set up the AE as a wireless access point on the router (and the mac address is correct I've checked). I tried adding my laptop, didn't work. Removed the laptop, still didn't work.

It does look like the set-up is correct though.

Btw, I'm using Kaspersky 2010 as my AV and Firewall. Do I need to change anything there? I had a quick look and all seems normal. I can see the traffic on the network coming from the Apple device (TCP "outbound"). I'm feeling closer than before to the end of this tunnel, though I can't see the light just yet. Grrr..

Turn off the firewall for starters.
