Playstation 3, 80gb or new slim version, which is best for use as a DVD blu-ray & HD upgrading of DVD's

Hi

I'm looking at purchasing a playstation 3 not only to utilise as a games consol but also to use as a blu-ray player and I have heard that the Playstation 3 also upgrades plain DVD's to HD.

Could anyone tell me first of all do I have my facts right with the above and which Playstation 3 is best suited to for this.

Thanks

Doesn't upgrade, but upscales standard-definition video to near-HD quality. I'd say there's not much between the two, but our test-team reckons the slim is slightly – and only very slightly – better.

Loading times are slighlty slower on the slim, but you can get hidef DTS through it (Unlike the other models)

Its a lot lower power consumption rate than the older PS3s too

Personally speaking I prefer the older ones with the standard 3 pin IEC so I can fit a decent mains cable to it (Slims have the 'figure of 8' type)

Get a standalone blu ray player..Sony BDP S360 and an Xbox 360..both much better in their respected fields.

the old phat ps3,will still decode dts-hd master audio, where the ps3 slim will bitstream the dts hd audio.and upscaling means it will fill the panel of your screen,Or place the information that should be there,You cannot turn a standard dvd and make it hd.Its just not possible.

I certainly agree about the standalone blu-ray player. A BDP-S360/363 will leave the PS3 for dust when it comes to blu-ray performance.

I can't comment on the gaming side because I have absolutely no expertise or interest in it.
Excited about receiving all the bits and putting the system together...

After fitting a 16 core braided cable to my PS3 I would happily put it against the S360. There was quite a step up in quality (Id guess because it has no filters or very poor filtering in it)

And id like to see how the 360 would handle the sheer graphical juggernaut of 'Uncharted 2'

The old "phat" ps3 uses 8 cooling fans, two are just for the prossesors. And the ps3 slim uses just one.I have my 60gig ps3 flat and after a while you can hear the fans kick in.seems to work harder when playing sacd,s or blu-ray discs(films).had mine since launch. But i dont hammer it like a fifteen year old lol(no sarcasic jokes).

Uncharted who?? I think everyones forgotten about that linear game since Modern Warfare 2 came out which is incidently better on the 360.  Besides a year old Gears of War 2 looks as good if not better than Uncharted 2.

Phew! After your post the other day on another PS3 thread where you sort of recommended someone buy one depending on what games they liked, I almost thought you'd gone a bit soft for the PS3 there, Ginder. Good to see everything is back to normal!

EDIT - just to point out my tongue is fully in cheek for above remark considering the way this thread is going now - hope this was realised but thought I'd make it obvious just in case Smile

How is it 'better' on xbox? They have colour differences due to the way they work, what else?

As for uncharted ~ have you seen it in action when its pushing polygons by the millions? Or are you just an xbox 'fanboy' who cant do anything else except slag off every other console?

Re: Playstation 3, 80gb or new slim version, which is best for use as a DVD blu-ray & HD upgrading of DVD's

Nah im not an xbox fanboy as you put it lol infact i have all 3 consoles with the best titles on each platform.including Uncharted 1&2 Resistence 1&2, Killzone 2, and even the consoles best game MGS4.

If it were just 'colour differences' between MW2 then that would be ok but its not just colour differences..the whole image looks terribly washed out theres less detail and lighting is not up to par either.. heres a couple examples with the ps3 version being on the left and xbox on the right.

Aside from the look, the xbox version has a better framerate and finally but most importantly it comes down to the multiplayer aspect of the game..only a ps3 'fanboy' would say that PSN is as good as xbox live whereas it honestly doesnt even come close..yes its free but it truely shows that a free service doesnt mean a good service.

2million people were on mw2 online simultaneously and that didnt cripple or slow xbox live down at all, whereas the ps3 had major issues online upon release with alot of people not being able to play the multiplayer.

As for competitive gaming just go onto gamebattles.com to get a cross section of the number of people choosing the xbox version over the ps3... you will see how many EU teams there are for the game for each of the consoles.. over 6000 for the xbox 360 and just 1200 for the ps3.  The xbox version sold double the amount than the ps3 according to one report http://ps3.qj.net/Xbox-360-Call-of-Duty-Modern-Warfare-2-sells-more-than-PS3-so-far/pg/49/aid/135902

Im not a 'fanboy' i just know what im on about.

Re: Playstation 3, 80gb or new slim version, which is best for use as a DVD blu-ray & HD upgrading of DVD's

I cant disagree that the xbox live service is far better than what we have on the PS3. Hopefully that WILL get better over time

The framerate is better by about an average of 5 frames per second when the average framerate for both consoles was running around 50

Ive seen those pictures elsewhere but I can tell you now they look anything BUT washed out on my PS3. I question if the tv used was properly calibrated for the PS3 or if they simply unplugged one and plugged in the other to test

If we were to nitpick I would have to say the xbox is VERY slightly better due to the framerate. As a game though the 2 are virtually identical
