I need help choosing a blue ray player !

Hello all,

I am near compleating my set up and the last bit of the jigsaw is the Blue-ray. I have a Samsung Plasma which only goes to 720p. It is a fantastic television and the picture quality is great. Do I have to take in to consideration the 720p when purchasing? I have had my eye on the highly rated Sony BDP-S760 . Is this a good decision or could I just go for a Sony BDP-S360 ? Its a lot cheaper ! and would my television do the higher priced player justice?

or does the fact that my television is 720p make no difference?

any suggestions would be greatfully received. Am I barking up the wrong tree with the Sony?

cheers Matt

if the tv's staying then the 360 would be the better choice. blu ray is only really achievable with 1080p which your tv cant recieve. i'm not 100 per cent sure but at 720p even a dvd player can upscale to that and you'd be saving money on the difference between a blu ray movie and dvd costs.

I would go with the cheaper Sony player or the older S350 model which I think is still available at the likes of amazon for £130.  The whole resoution debate will rage on and on but if you're sat a reasonable distance from the screen (what size is it), the difference is negligable unless you're chasing absolute perfection imho.

Yes go for a budget player and check out some deals coming out this month< i beleive Blockbusters are going to do a promotion on the Panasonic bd60, with i think seven free films for £149. Check out Hotdeals uk website always lots of blu-players and films mentioned on there.

The only reason to go for the S760 is the wi-fi feature. If you're not bothered by it, go for the S360. S350 is also good & a bit cheaper, but I don't see any point in spending £130 for an older model, when the S360 is available for £139.

Re: I need help choosing a blue ray player !

Blockbuster.co.uk are doing the sony 360 on preorder with 4 free blu ray movies for £149.99.

That sounds to me a sound deal - even the 4 free movies are good.

Re: I need help choosing a blue ray player !

Hi Gel - I was using a Pioneer 400 series which went to 1135i/720p and bought a sony BDP550 Blu Ray player - yes I got some upscaling for normal DVDs which I did not have before but the blu ray playing on 1135i/720p was a disappointment.  Now I have a 1080p/24p Panasonic 58V10 connected and the Sony outputing at 1080p the picture change is amazing - which is why you should always have, if you can affotrd it,  the TV to match.  If you have a lower performance TV then pumping in a higher grade picture will get you very little improvment - yes it will upscale you old DVDs but if you want blu ray I would suggest you need a 1080p TV.

Re: I need help choosing a blue ray player !

Disagree with some of these posts. I have a Pioneer plasma which I bought just before 1080p came out and have the Oppo 83 bluray player.  The picture is stunning and better than any 1080p picture I've seen elsewhere. Only the full HD Pioneer plasmas are better-I havent seen any other brand of TV that comes close to my 1080i/720p Pionner picture. I know you said Matt in your original post you have a Samsung plasma, but I guarantee if you set your screen up properly you will have a fantastic picture from bluray. Dont worry that you dont have 1080p. I actually would prefer the picture on your plasma to a full HD LCD any day of the week.

Re: I need help choosing a blue ray player !

The sony bdp360 deal from blockbuster that was mentioned looks like the best bet, id go for that one personally.

Re: I need help choosing a blue ray player !

Dear Pioneerblue,

Thanks very much for your helpful post.Since your post my friend has come round and plugged his pioneer blu ray in to test your advice. We set the player to output at 1080i. The picture looks stunning. The scene in Hong Kong ( Dark Knight) looks crystal clear. The movement is so smooth and natural......I love my television,,,,It turns out I didn't make a school boy error after all..... and may be by luck made a very good choise of television.

Oh yes and the sound was well.........superb...

Thanks everyone for all the advice and Pinoneerblue for showing me the way........A Pioneer it is then.
